Fires can be started even by careless speech, as James 3 :5-18 brings out. May there be the life-giving waters of truth to put out the fires of bitterness and cursing, unruliness and disdain.

I'm a Liar
by Perry inso, i'm downtown quite early the other morning while still dark and i see a man holding an awake.
so, i pull over and wave him over.
after a few words of cordiality, i ask him why jehovah's witnesses teach that jesus returned invisibly in 1914 when jesus himself said this:in matthew 24:.

to vitty: I'll be there with the local congregation, as I've been every year since I began to go in 1990. It's a sign of respect and acceptance of my need of his sacrifice. Being solidly of the earthy-hope class, I will take the plate and wine glass very carefully and observantly, so that I may pass the emblems along for the next person ready to take them. Thanks for wondering. It's good to experience wonder and amazement that such mere mortals as us can, somehow, have the hope of living forever, even when we aren't able to speak to any of the dear brothers and sisters or interested ones there. I wouldn't miss it for the world, even if some could legitimately call me a liar or a hypocrite. A hypocrite is an actor, and some of us only know how to act.

to Tyrone van leyen: I think we all can learn more about curiosity, imagination, and respect, even as Jesus commended the little children for their humility. Ad hominem attacks hardly inspire these positive virtues, even in those who dearly love their enemies.

A real view of a culture that's more interested in a fire engine than a prophet of Jehovah. Priorities, priorities. At least the girl still has curiosity and imagination and respect for strangers. If only we could all be more like that humble, young girl.
Dear SirNose586, if people built with more fire-resistant materials, and were more careful, fires could be avoided. 2 Peter 3 speaks of a fire that the world won't be able to put out, even by the selfless firemen of which you speak. Maturity is very much required to understand what the Witnesses are trying to tell. Even the most alert among them/us are saved with difficulty, so how will those who mock have a chance? No, it's far from a perfect world we live in. But, then, God is not one to be mocked.

And, now that SirNose586 and I have had our levity, it's time we get back to the serious situation at hand, or start a new thread. Being a liar is something we've all felt sorry about at one time or another. Some of us have tried to permanently quit the habit. I think Liars Anonymous is an idea whose time has come.

Is practicing Capoeira wrong/bad/discouraged by Jehovah's Witnesses?
by aikichristian inmy girlfriend used to be an avid capoeira practicioner for over year.
she has reaped many benefits from it: increased physical fitness, flexibility, some self-defense skills, and stress-relief.
she enjoyed it.. unfortunately, an article came out in the spanish version of the "watchtower" ("atalaya" in spanish) essentially saying that capoeira should not be practiced because it has some spirituality stuff in it that was wrong.

Back to the thread topic, and SirNose586. As he quoted me so well, it bears repeating:
Christian balance requires understanding the Scriptural principles involved, and acting accordingly. It's more challenging to achieve than it may sound. The factors involved do change over time as the symbols and actions change meaning within the cultures over time (both the culture of the many, and the culture of Jehovah's Witnesses).
The WT has presented well-reasoned articles over the years on the changes in meaning of many things, among them baptism, wedding rings, and baby showers. Why, even the Bible itself speaks of the Jews' many other baptisms, which were not required among Jehovah's Witnesses, whether in the 1st century CE or now. As for the clinking of glasses, the clinkers are not raising their songbooks and voices in praise of Jehovah, are they? And even if they were, is it drinking of alcohol, or in this thread, martial-arts training that improves outcomes in decision-making? Hardly! Rather, as the Good Book says, at 1 Timothy 4:5, "bodily training is beneficial for a little; but godly devotion is beneficial for all things, as it holds promise of the life now and that which is to come." Articles, such as are found in the Watchtower and Awake!, provide us with what we need at the proper time. Let us not go beyond what is written, even here. -

and empathy is a supplement we could all use a 70cc shot of. It really can do wonders! Thanks, SirNose586, for your boost for my smile. It feels much better, now that it's turned the right way up.

to SirNose586:
Perhaps he just got rattled, and forgot his lines. It can happen, even to the best of us.

A rose by any other name is still just as prickly. Martial arts are still exercises that are intended for those that prepare for war. (Mars is the Roman god of war; Martial is an adjectival form of Mars.) This thread' first post, by aikichristian, pretty much answered his own question with his own research.
